Liga Deportiva Alajuelense sorprendió en este mercado de piernas con la contratación de Manjrekar James para el Clausura 2024. Curiosamente, el central canadiense —quien firmó por cuatro torneos cortos y fue presentado oficialmente este viernes— reveló que estuvo cerca de llegar al club hace algunos años.}

Esto sucedió cuando el español Benito Floro llegó al banquillo Rojinegro en 2016. El ex técnico de Real Madrid fue también uno de los responsables del actual éxito de la Selección de Canadá, de la cual se hizo cargo de 2013 hasta que se marchó al fútbol tico. Allí dirigió a James, convocado por primera vez bajo su gestión.

“Uno de mis antiguos entrenadores estuvo aquí. Se suponía que debía venir aquí hace un tiempo, pero decidí no hacerlo en ese momento y ahora pensé que era un buen momento”, le comentó el espigado central al canal oficial de la Liga.

ESPN se contactó con Floro, campeón de la Copa del Rey y la Supercopa de España con Real Madrid en 1993, para que hablara sobre las condiciones de su ex pupilo. “James es un excelente jugador en todos los sentidos, con la cabeza, y cuerpo de atleta con experiencia en el fútbol europeo”, aseguró.

Recordemos que el futbolista de 30 años hizo gran parte su carrera como legionario: jugó en Hungría (Pécsi, Vasas y Diósgyőri), Dinamarca (Fredericia y Vejle), Grecia (PAS Lamia) y Ucrania (Chornomorets), llegando a disputar la Champions League en 2020 cuando integraba las filas del Midtjylland danés.

El DT asturiano duró menos de un año en Alajuelense, donde también ejerció como director deportivo de enero hasta agosto de 2017. Estuvo al frente en 28 partidos entre Primera División y Liga CONCACAF —donde Olimpia los derrotó 2-0 y 1-0 para dejarlos afuera en primera ronda—, de los cuales perdió 10, empató 9 y ganó otros 9.
