Múnich, Alemania – Adiós a una leyenda del fútbol. Franz Beckenbauer, ‘El Káiser’ (Múnich, Alemania, 1945), ha fallecido hoy a la edad de 78 años tras luchar los últimos meses contra una enfermedad que lo había tenido fuera de la vida pública. El histórico líbero está reconocido como uno de los mejores jugadores de todos los tiempos. Ganó el Mundial como jugador en 1974 y como seleccionador en 1990, una Eurocopa (1972), tres Copas de Europa consecutivas (1974-1977) y dos Balones de Oro (1972 y 1976).

“Me hubiese gustado viajar, pero mi salud no me permite realizar viajes largos”, declaró Beckenbauer en un comunicado poco después del fallecimiento de Pelé, tras no poder asistir al funeral de ‘O Rei’. Y es que hace algunos meses, Beckenbauer reconoció públicamente haber perdido la visión en su ojo derecho y que los médicos le recomendaron evitar los viajes largos ante sus problemas cardíacos.

Beckenbauer, que estaba en el Olimpo de los mejores futbolistas del Siglo XX junto a Diego Armando Maradona, el propio Pelé, Cruyff, Eusebio, Di Stefano, Puskas, tuvo una larga carrera como futbolista. Debutó con el Bayern en 1964 y se retiró en el New York Cosmos en 1983.

Él hizo grande el Bayern, en parte. Lideró un equipo de leyenda que contaba con Gerd Müller, Uli Hoeneß o Sepp Maier, entre otros, iniciando la hegemonía bávara en la Bundesliga. Antes de su debut, apenas habían ganado dos Bundesligas. Ahora suman 33. “Franz Beckenbauer no miraba el balón, sino que lo percibía con el pie”, fue como lo definió Schwarzenbeck.

En Estados Unidos cerró su carrera tras haber hecho historia con Pelé, formando uno de los equipos más icónicos del fútbol mundial: aquel New York Cosmos que ganó tres campeonatos. Antes, había ganado todo lo que se podía ganar con el Bayern y la selección alemana (103 partidos).

Su palmarés, de hecho, es de los más extensos del fútbol germano: cinco Bundesligas (incluida una con el Hamburgo en su retorno a Alemania en 1982), cuatro copas, una Recopa de Europa, tres Copas de Europa (consecutivas) y una Copa Intercontinental. Además, una Eurocopa y un Mundial, el de 1974, cuando era el capitán de la selección de Alemania Federal que ganó el título en casa, en Múnich.

Como entrenador, Beckenbauer también ganó: el Mundial de 1990 celebrado en Italia ante Argentina o una Bundesliga y una Copa de la UEFA con el Bayern. Después sería presidente del Bayern durante 15 años antes de ser designado presidente honorífico, cargo que ha ostentado hasta su fallecimiento.

En lo referente a galardones individuales, Beckenbauer también ha ganado todo: dos Balones de Oro (1972 y 1976), tercer mejor futbolista del Siglo XX según a IFFHS, Dream Team de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA… Además, Beckenbauer también es MARCA Leyenda. “Con esto mi viaje a Madrid ha merecido ya la pena. Recibir este galardón de un diario como MARCA y además acompañado por Alfredo, Luis y José es increíble”, declaró por aquel entonces, en 2012.
